Domain Names
To get on the internet as such and have a website, the first stage in this process is to register what is called a Domain Name. This is the 'www.something.com' name. The .com part of the name is known as the TLD - Top Level Domain, and there are several out there. Examples are .com, .co.uk, .net, .org.uk, etc. You choice for a name maybe slightly limiting and this may determine what TLD you choose, but ultimately there are search tools on the web which will search for your desired name across several TLD's.
Try www.ukreg.com or even www.heartinternet.co.uk. These sites will generally search for your name across several TLD's.
Obviously JockIT can assist you with your decision on a name and also with registration. JockIT has years of experience of what names will work and will be easily remembered (it may also help with search engines!).

Hosting
The next stage after snagging your domain name is to get a presence on the internet through a website (registering a domain name does not necessarily give your a presence on the internet!). The next process is called hosting. This is effectively a computer (server) somewhere which is connected to the (backbone) of the internet and when somebody types in your domain name, the internet directs traffic to your website/server (this is done through a system called DNS - Domain Name System).
Obviously doing this yourself can be very expensive so you would tend to purchase hosting from a professional hosting company, like JockIT. The economies of scale mean that hosting with JockIT is good value for money.
Hosting with JockIT costs £35 per year (recurring cost) and not only provides you with a website on the internet but with a Control Panel for you to manage other features such as email accounts. You also get a free webmail interface!

Complete website builds
You may just be starting out with a website presence or simply wanting to refresh your current website, but whatever your needs, JockIT can help you out with any of these requirements.
Website costing is not something that can follow a standard pricing matrix so providing you with a formal quotation is the best way forward. As mentioned, depending on the complexity of your site will determine the price. I tend not to price on 'number of pages' because that is slightly limiting. Also, with a templated system (where your pages all follow the same or similar layout), providing additional pages should be almost a 'cust & paste' job and therefore once the template is complete, the number of pages provided by that template is minimal.
All of the cost is in getting the templates, style and dynamics of the site setup. For a simple site the cost can be anywhere between £250-£500.
More complex websites (including eCommerce - taking online payments) can be more costly - anywhere from £1250-£2000.
These are simply indications of some of the cost so you can make a decision on what to do.
I also like to build in some form of self control to your websites and you may hear of this being called a CMS - Content Management System. This is a system that allows you update content yourself on your website.
There are 'off-the-shelf' CMS systems such as Joomla and Drupal and even Wordpress, but I tend to build my own to allow the greatest flexibility. For simple websites the CMS interface is relatively easy. For more complex sites such as product listing sites, this can get complex.

[Techincal bit: I build websites using a scripting language called PHP. I also use a mySQL database to store all of your content which allows me to develop pages which enables you to update that content]
